Many of us put a lot of time and effort into our food. We try to make good choices about what we put into our bodies, conscious of how it affects our moods, energy levels, and overall health. We strive to eat more fresh foods than processed foods – even though the latter can be so much more convenient – knowing that freshness is very closely tied with nutrition levels.

What some of us might not think about though is that even when we opt for fresh fruits and vegetables, we might not be maximizing their health benefits. If your refrigerator is not maintaining the optimal temperature and humidity level for your fresh produce, then the produce is slowly leaking its nutrients. By the time you reach for the last apple, it likely does not have as many vitamins and minerals as on the day you purchased it. Furthermore, it may not taste as good.

If freshness and nutrient preservation are a priority for you, Liebherr refrigerators were built for you. The Liebherr BioFresh system prolongs the life of fruits and vegetables by up to three times that of a traditional refrigerator. Liebherr BioFresh offers separate temperature- and humidity-controlled compartments for fruits and vegetables.

In the Liebherr HydroSafe drawer, humidity is high to keep fruits fresh and juicy, while in the DrySafe drawer, humidity is low to keep vegetables fresh and crisp. The DrySafe is also ideal for meat, fish and cheese. Temperatures remain consistently just above freezing in both compartments. For optimal freshness, fruits and vegetables should remain unwrapped in these compartments, allowing air and humidity to circulate around them.

For even more precision control, the tasteful control panel allows you to input specific food items, and it will then tailor the atmosphere in the BioFresh drawers to those foods.

Liebherr BioFresh Drawers
Liebherr’s BioFresh drawers keep your fruits, vegetables and meats at ideal storage temperatures.

In addition to the precision of the BioFresh system, Liebherr refrigeration promises long-lasting durability. Each part of the refrigerator is tested during the building process, and each refrigerator must pass a round of testing before it is shipped to a Liebherr appliance dealer. Liebherr refrigerators are tested under the most extreme temperature conditions – from tropical heat to arctic cold – to make sure they continue to function in your home, even if your heat or air conditioning are not. With a commitment to the highest level of perfection, Liebherr also tests its refrigerators in an acoustics lab and eliminates any unnecessary sounds from the refrigerators’ fans and motors. Liebherr USA also offers timeless designs that assimilate well into any kitchen.

As you think about fresh foods, remember to consider how your refrigerator impacts freshness and whether Liebherr can help achieve your aspirations of optimal health.

There’s just something magical about eating out of doors. If you’re anything like me, you’ll gladly wait for a table on the patio of your favorite restaurant over one that’s immediately available inside. There’s a reason why restaurant owners invest in creating lovely, welcoming spaces outside. Fresh air and sunshine (or dining under the stars!) provide the best ambiance for a great meal.

It’s becoming more and more common to replicate the outdoor dining experience at home. Until recently, lush landscaping and eloquently designed pools were the epitome of outdoor home design. The idea has evolved recently into the design of outdoor living spaces or outdoor rooms, if you will. Of course, the heart of every home is the kitchen. Therefore, it really is no surprise that outdoor kitchens are quickly becoming de rigueur. The allure of the outdoor living space is the ability to entertain alongside your family and guests. With your fully functional outdoor kitchen, now you can prep, cook and clean up outside all without missing a beat or a good story!

The ASKO outdoor dishwasher
ASKO’s outdoor dishwasher can be installed as either a freestanding or built-in unit.

The ASKO outdoor dishwasher (ASKO D5954), the first ever of its kind, fits perfectly into your outdoor kitchen. With an impressive 14 place settings capacity, you will have all of the clean dishes you need within arms reach of your grill, outdoor cooktop, outdoor refrigerator and sink. This latest innovation truly does bring a fully functional kitchen outside for you and your family and friends to enjoy. Talk about convenient and just plain cool!

Hidden controls on ASKO's outdoor dishwasher
Hidden controls on ASKO’s outdoor dishwasher.

With all the amenities and quality features that have made ASKO the dishwasher of choice in America for over 25 years, the ASKO outdoor dishwasher stands up to the elements, can be installed as a stand-alone or built-in and does what a dishwasher does best: makes your life easier.

ASKO Outdoor Dishwasher Built-In
The outdoor dishwasher shown in a built-in configuration.

I’m thinking I wouldn’t have a bit of trouble getting help in the kitchen if it were a fully equipped, state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen. In fact, I’m pretty certain there would be no shortage of volunteers waiting eagerly to “help” (more like, play) with my outdoor kitchen dishwasher.

So, really the only question that remains is: Whose turn is it to load?

Upgraded New Bosch Dishwashers To Be Released May 15th

At Elite Appliance, we keep on top of the latest trends in the luxury appliance market. We watch and respond to the industry’s trendsetters, investigating all the latest products, and when an industry frontrunner reinvents its product line with an entire new menu of capabilities, we celebrate with the eager excitement of a child awaiting a birthday gift.

Bosch 2013 New Dishwasher Lineup
From left to right: New recessed handle with angled control, new flush handle with hidden control, new bar handle with hidden control, and custom panel with hidden control.

Bosch – already hailed for producing some of the best and quietest dishwashers available today – is introducing an entire new line of dishwashers with full upgrades to the outer design and inner features. The new 2013 Bosch dishwashers are ideal for those who entertain as they are built with added capacity and adjustable racks to accommodate large plates and stemware. Keep an eye out for the new Bosch dishwashers, which will be available to order on May 15th, 2013.

To begin, each a few new handle options will be available in various series levels. Bosch has redesigned their recessed handle models with a new ergonomic control panel angled toward the user, making it easier to view without bending over. A brand new handle option, the flush handle, is perfect for someone who prefers hidden controls but is concerned about a bar handle not matching the other appliances in their kitchen. Finally, Bosch has redesigned their bar-handle dishwashers with larger squared end caps, as well as less curve to the handle.

300 Series Upgrades

While some upgrades apply only to higher-level models, several major improvements apply starting at the 300 Series level. All 300 Series dishwashers and higher come with expanded tubs and racks and new concave inner doors. Combined, these features offer an additional 3 inches of loading space. Despite the deeper tub, the dishwashers still fit standard dishwasher cutouts and sit flush with cabinetry.

New Detergent Tray On All 300 Series And Up Dishwashers
Detergent drops into the new detergent tray (on all 300 Series and up) and is dissolved with specially aimed spray jets.

Also expanding the capacity of Bosh dishwashers, the new RackMatic top rack – now on all dishwashers 300 Series and up – is designed to allow for stemware in the upper rack, or when adjusted to a higher setting, to accommodate 12.5” plates in the bottom rack.

Bosch has always been a leader in reduced noise level, and the updated Bosch dishwashers are no exception. Not only does the 300 Series run at a low decibel level of 46, but also the new Bosch dishwashers run with two independent motors that eliminate that odd snorkeling drain noise we so often hear during the dish cycle.

Also addressing noise level, new Bosch dishwashers were designed with sprinklers that do not spray the inner door of the dishwasher. Most dishwashers require sprinklers to splash the door to extract dish detergent from the detergent tray. However, Bosch’s new detergent dispenser drops the detergent into a tray below where spray jets can access it easily away from the door. Not only does this system reduce noise, but also it dissolves dish detergent thoroughly and evenly for a consistent wash.

All new dishwashers also feature Bosch’s unique Aqua Stop Leak Protection system, which diverts water back into the pipes and away from the floor if a leak occurs – thus preventing water damage and dangerous slips in your kitchen.

500 Series Upgrades

3rd Rack On All 500 Series Dishwashers
A third v-shaped rack is now featured on all 500 and 800 Series Bosch dishwashers.

Bosch’s 500 Series dishwashers offer all the same advanced features of the 300 Series – the deeper tub and concave door, the new detergent tray, and the RackMatic top rack. However, the 500 Series also offers a couple extra features. First, the 500 Series dishwashers now have hidden controls and a flush door handle for a sleek look. Second, if you’re looking for the quietest Bosch dishwasher, you can select from any dishwasher in the 500 Series and up. These dishwashers run at just 44 decibels. Finally, all 500 Series units feature a new v-shaped 3rd rack at the top for cutlery and small dishes. A dedicated rotating spray nozzle ensures that all contents of the 3rd rack receive ample cleaning attention.

800 and 800+ Series Upgrades

Intertior Lights On Select 800+ Series Dishwashers
New interior lights are featured on 800 Plus models SHX8PT55UC and SHE8PT55UC

While the 300 and 500 Series are certainly impressive in their list of features and advancements, Bosch takes things to a new level with the 800 and 800+ Series dishwashers. For example, 800 Series dishwashers have an eco cycle that provides even more efficiency for the environmentally-conscious.

Dishwashers in the 800+ category also have a glass cycle designed specifically for delicate clear glassware, a water softener for those in hard-water areas, and a unique new TimeLight feature that displays the time remaining in a wash cycle onto the floor in front of the dishwasher. Bosch’s “8 Series” 800+ dishwashers (SHX8PT55UC, SHE8PT55UC) also have interior LED lights, and the SHE8PT55UC model features a new display system – the Thin Film Transistor – to keep you informed of the dishwasher’s current settings and progress. All 800+ models have an upgraded flexible third rack with foldable pins for silverware with wire ends/handles.

All new Bosch dishwashers will be live on EliteAppliance.com starting May 15th!

Our Favorite Vent-A-Hood Custom Hood Design Ideas

We recently announced the addition of Vent-A-Hood range hoods to our inventory here at Elite Appliance. We walked you briefly through the history of the American company, which was founded in Dallas in 1933, and we introduced you to Vent-A-Hood’s patented Magic Lung technology, which allows the vent hoods to perform exceptionally quietly and efficiently.

Today, we’re focusing on the aesthetics of these custom kitchen hoods. The brand offers quite a range of styles – from understated and purely functional to artful designs that not only complement their surroundings but might even serve as a focal point of a kitchen. Vent-A-Hoods are available in under-cabinet, wall-mount, and island configurations. It is also notable that Vent-A-Hood designs its hoods to function in damp, outdoor settings as well as climate-controlled indoor locations. A protective branch circuit, sold separately, allows you to use your vent hood in your outdoor kitchen.

Vent-A-Hood custom vent hoods are also available in a variety of sizes to accommodate varying ceiling heights.

Contemporary Series Vent-A-Hood
Vent-A-Hood Contemporary Series island hood with matching duct cover.

CIEH9 · Contemporary Series

One of our favorite custom vent hoods is the CIEH9, an elegant island hood that takes the standard chimney hood form to the next level with a stair-step-like design. The hood is available in stainless steel or painted and is most appealing when paired with a matching island duct cover.

ISFH30 · Flairline

Another of our favorites is the ISFH30, another custom Vent-A-Hood designed for a kitchen island or an outdoor kitchen. The dark color is bordered by a shining stainless steel border at the bottom of the hood and another ribbon of stainless steel about two-thirds of the way up. The concave flair shape gives this hood a somewhat dominant presence. This Flairline hood is available in stainless steel, brass, copper, hammered copper or painted finish.

Outdoor Vent-A-Hood Flairline Vent

CWLH9 · Contemporary Series

Another more geometric option, this time wall-mount placement, the CWLH9 is perfect for any contemporary kitchen. The stair-step pattern is accented by a stainless steel galley rail, which comes standard. This hood is available in stainless steel and painted finish and pairs well with modern, professional-style appliances.

CWLH9 Vent-A-Hood Kitchen Vent
Vent-A-Hood model CWLH9 comes with a stainless steel galley rail accent.

IZTH · Contemporary Series

Another of our favorite stainless steel vent hoods from Vent-A-Hood is the IZTH. Only available in stainless steel with glass accents, this hood is designed for those with ultra-contemporary tastes. A rounded-corner chimney extends from the ceiling, giving way to an arch-shaped hood. The matching duct cover is sold separately but is essential to complete the look.

Vent-A-Hood’s IZTH island hood demonstrates the brand’s modern side.

Best 36″ Induction Cooktops: Top Picks For 2013

Induction cooktops are a safe, convenient and stylish option for any home kitchen. Their dark, sleek surface is unobtrusive and easy to clean. Their heat conduction is safe with no open flame and a surface that remains cool to the touch even when heating pots to the highest temperatures. Furthermore, according to Electrolux, induction cooktops are 70 percent more efficient than gas cooktops and 20 percent more efficient than electric cooktops.

If that’s not enough, a perusal of 36″ induction cooktop reviews reveals the top appliance brands have enhanced their induction cooktops with advanced features that make them even more user-friendly.

Jenn-Air JIC4536XS

Jenn-Air Induction Cooktop with Downdraft Ventilation
Jenn-Air’s 36″ induction cooktop paired with a downdraft vent.

The Jenn-Air JIC4536XS has five induction elements with five separate times and touch-activated controls. A Keep Warm Function helps food stay warm until serving time, and a Performance Boost Function offers a 10-minute spurt of heat that exceeds the maximum heat setting on each element in order to bring water to a boil quickly or sear meats or fish. When you’re finished cooking a full meal on the Jenn-Air cooktop, you simply touch one button to turn off the entire cooktop. The dark cooktop is framed in stainless steel trim. However, the JIC4536XB model offers the same cooktop features without the trim.

Bosch NIT8665UC

Bosch Induction Cooktop
The Bosch 36″ induction stovetop features a unique AutoChef Sensor function.

The Bosch NIT8665UC also features five heat elements with a separate timer for each. Similar to Jenn-Air’s Performance Boost, Bosch offers a SpeedBoost to boil water quickly. The Bosch cooktop also features Overflow Detection, which sounds an alarm and turns the cooktop off when a pot boils over. The PotSense feature adjusts the heat to the size of the pan, and a child lock prevents burners from being turned on inadvertently. One unique feature of the Bosch cooktop is the AutoChef Sensor, which helps fry foods at just the right temperature to prevent scorching or oversaturation with frying oils.

Electrolux EW36CC55GB

Electrolux Induction Cooktop
Electrolux configures their induction elements slightly different than other brands, as this model illustrates.

The Electrolux EW36CC55GB features a simple sleek black top, or you may opt for the similar EW36CC55GS with a stainless steel trim around the edges. Either way, you’ll benefit from the 25 preset touch settings, the convenient Keep Warm Setting, the control lock for safety, the Sabbath Mode and more. The Power Assist Function allows you to boil water in just 90 seconds, so you can get on to the more important cooking tasks and better yet, to serving and eating. The five heating elements are different sizes to accommodate a range of pots and pans.

KitchenAid KICU569XSS

KitchenAid Induction Cooktop
KitchenAid’s 36″ induction cooktop is our top pick in the induction category.

Similar to the Jenn-Air and Bosch, the KitchenAid KICU569XSS offers a performance boost setting that raises temperatures above the maximum setting on the burner controls in order to jump-start heat for rapid boiling. The five heating elements are arranged with the largest in the center. One useful function of the KitchenAid induction cooktop is the bridge element, which combines the heat from two 7″ elements so you can use large grill pans, griddles or roasting pans. The KitchenAid also offers a Melt & Hold function and pan size detection. The KitchenAid KICU569XSS has a stainless steel trim, but the comparable KICU569XBL comes without the trim for those who prefer.

Best 36″ Induction Cooktop

As we compare induction cooktops across the major competitors in the market, we appreciate the KitchenAid 36″ induction stovetop for its subtlety of design and its ability to accommodate a wide range of cookware, including large grill and griddle pans. In terms of features, it also stands up to the competition with the Performance Boost Function, the Melt & Hold Function, the safety lock and more.

Liebherr CS-1660 Review: 30″ Freestanding Bottom-Mount Refrigerator

As we approach the summer months, it’s a good time to assess our refrigerators – take note of how effective they are at keeping food fresh and keeping energy consumption low. One brand that has worked tirelessly to achieve these two goals is Liebherr.

Liebherr Bottom-Mount Refrigerator with Doors Ajar
Liebherr’s 30″ bottom-mount stainless steel refrigerator in a left-hinge configuration (CS1661).

The Liebherr CS1660 30″ freestanding bottom-mount refrigerator feature advanced systems to protect food from frost while ensuring lasting freshness and preserved nutrients. The refrigerator also has several features that makes it user-friendly and eco-friendly.

The CS1660 comes with a right-hinged door, but it can be reversed to a left-hinged setup if your space requires it. Opt for two CS1660 units (one in each hinge type) for double the capacity in a side-by-side configuration.

This Liebherr freestanding refrigerator features a sleek stainless steel exterior and a bright and spacious interior. The drawers and door shelves are made from transparent plastic, allowing you to see easily what’s inside at all times. The GlassLine storage shelves also add to the feeling of openness and transparency inside the refrigerator while an efficient LED light column illuminates the entire interior space.

Handle of a Liebherr CS-1660
A closer look at the door handle on the Liebherr CS-1660.

The Liebherr 30″ refrigerator is also designed for maximum capacity, offering 11.2 cubic feet in the refrigerator and 4.2 cubic feet in the bottom-mount freezer. A MagicEye readout displays the temperature at all times and allows you to adjust it to your needs with ease and precision.

One of the Liebherr CS-1660 refrigerator’s most notable features is the BioFresh system, which according to Liebherr, can keep foods fresh for up to three times longer than a traditional refrigeration system.

The BioFresh system works by optimizing temperature and humidity levels for particular types of foods. For example the DrySafe drawer keeps humidity low for meat, fish and dairy storage. In contrast, the HydroSafe drawer maintains high humidity levels for fruits and vegetables. Both compartments keep the temperature constantly just above freezing – keeping food from freezing or frosting while ensuring ultimate freshness and preservation.

Liebherr BioFresh Drawer
The BioFresh HydroSafe drawer keeps your veggies at optimal humidity levels.

Not only does the BioFresh system save you money by keeping food from spoiling quicker than you can eat it, but it also keeps you healthier by preserving the vitamins and nutrients that dissipate as foods lose their freshness.

At the same time, you can also take comfort in the EnergyStar rating that ensures you your refrigerator is running at optimum efficiency, which is especially important in those hot summer months.
